What we file

A notice is a legal document.

Six required parts, sent to the one address that has to act on it.

The six parts

In every notice. No exceptions.

A notice missing any one does not legally put the host on notice. Ours cannot be produced incomplete.

  1. 01
    § 512(c)(3)(A)(i)

    A signature

From the owner, or someone authorised to act for them. Ours is signed as your agent.

  2. 02
    § 512(c)(3)(A)(ii)

    The work that was copied

What was copied, and where you published it.

  3. 03
    § 512(c)(3)(A)(iii)

    Where the copy is

The exact address, the matching passage, and the page of yours it came from.

  4. 04
    § 512(c)(3)(A)(iv)

    Contact details

Name, address, phone and email. These reach the other side, so you choose which ones.

  5. 05
    § 512(c)(3)(A)(v)

    A good-faith statement

That the use is not authorised by the owner, its agent, or the law.

  6. 06
    § 512(c)(3)(A)(vi)

    Accuracy, under penalty of perjury

That the notice is accurate and the sender is authorised. This is the sentence that carries the liability.

Where it goes

Five recipients. Five different outcomes.

We check the Copyright Office directory for every filing, because a notice to last year's agent does nothing.

What the other side sees

Your name is on it.

The host sees all of it

Name, address, the URLs and the evidence. Hosts commonly forward it to the site in full.

Google publishes to Lumen

Names, URLs and the explanation go to a public database. Contact details are withheld.

You choose what is used

Before anything is filed. A business name and address, never a home one.
